Money Lender · Cap. 163 · Mong Kok

Ten minutes
to decide.
Four years to pay.

Loan Express Limited lends from Argyle Street in Mong Kok. We are not a bank; we take no deposits and issue no cards.

Speed is what this end of the market sells, and speed is genuinely valuable — a deposit due on Friday does not care that a bank needs three weeks. But the two numbers in the headline are the real product, and almost every advertisement in this trade shows you the first while going quiet about the second.

So the page below is laid out as a clock. Not the clock on the approval, the clock on the obligation.

The actual timeline

What happens, and when. Note where the short intervals sit and where the long ones do — the imbalance is the whole thing worth understanding before you apply anywhere.

00:10minutes

You read an advertisement

Fast, easy, minimal documents. Every word of it may be true. None of it tells you the effective annual rate, the total repayable, or the term — which are the only three figures that describe what you are being offered.

00:30minutes

You apply

Identity, income, existing debts. This is also the point at which an enquiry is recorded and becomes visible to other lenders. Applying to eight companies in one afternoon leaves eight marks and makes approval less likely, not more.

01:00hour, or less

A decision arrives

Here is the trade nobody states aloud. A decision reached in minutes rests on a thinner assessment than one reached in days, and thinner assessment is priced for. Speed is not free; it is simply charged somewhere other than the headline.

02:00hours

You sign

The single most consequential two minutes of the process, usually conducted while relieved. Read the total repayable, the term, the late charges and the early settlement position. Never sign a document with blanks in it, and never sign one you have not read to the end.

24hours

The money arrives

The problem that prompted all of this is now solved. This is the last moment at which the loan feels like a solution rather than a fixture, and it lasts about a day.

48months

You are still paying

Every month, through job changes, moves, illnesses and everything else that four years contains. The decision took an hour; the consequence outlasts most tenancies. This is the interval the advertisement did not mention.

What speed costs

Not an argument against fast lending — we do it. An argument for knowing what you are buying when you buy speed. There are only three places the cost can go, and it always goes to one of them.

Cost goes here

Into the rate

A lender assessing quickly carries more risk on each file and prices accordingly. That is honest and it is expensive. Compare the effective annual rate against a bank's and you will see precisely what the speed cost you.

Or here

Into the term

Stretching repayment lowers the monthly figure to something that fits, and raises the total considerably. A comfortable instalment over a long term is the most common way an expensive loan is made to feel affordable.

Or here

Into the assessment

The cheapest way to be fast is to check less. That produces approvals for people who cannot service the debt — which is pleasant on the day and ruinous by month nine. This is the one to worry about.

And so

Ask which one

Ask any fast lender directly: what is the effective annual rate, what is the total repayable, and what did you actually verify. A firm that answers all three plainly is charging you for speed. A firm that answers none is charging you for something else.

When speed is genuinely worth paying for: a fixed deadline you cannot move, a cost that grows faster than the interest will, an opportunity that disappears. When it is not: a bill you have known about for a month, a want rather than a need, or a payment due to another lender. In the last case the speed is not solving anything — it is only bringing the next problem forward.

What we lend

Personal instalment

A fixed sum over a fixed term with a written schedule. The final payment date is known on the day you sign, and it is printed rather than described.

Short-term facilities

For a defined gap with an identified source of repayment. Where the exit is uncertain, short-term money makes the problem larger and adds a deadline to it.

Small business

Working capital for owner-run businesses around Mong Kok and across Kowloon, sized against a quiet month rather than a strong one.

Declined

Applications where the repayment cannot realistically be serviced, where the money is going to another lender's instalment, and anything arriving through a person expecting a fee from the borrower.

No rate appears on this page. Any single figure would be wrong for nearly everyone reading it, and a headline rate is advertising rather than information. What you will receive is the effective annual rate calculated on the basis the Ordinance specifies, the total amount repayable and the complete schedule, in writing, before signature. The statutory ceiling is an effective rate of 60% per annum — a ceiling, not a target, and lawful is not the same as affordable.

Questions

i.Is fast lending worse than slow lending?

No — it is different, and priced differently. The failure is not speed but the pretence that speed is free. A fast loan whose total repayable you read before signing is a decision. The same loan taken without reading it is a hope.

ii.Should I try a bank first?

If your deadline allows it, yes, and we will say so if you ask. Bank credit is generally cheaper. We earn a place where the timing genuinely cannot wait, the sum is modest, or the file is sound but does not fit a scorecard — not as a substitute for a facility you could have arranged last month.

iii. What should I read before signing?

The total amount repayable, the number of payments, the late payment charge, the default rate and the early settlement position. Five items. They are all in the document and they take about four minutes, which is the best-value four minutes in the entire process.

iv.Someone contacted me offering a loan from you.

Treat it as false until you have telephoned the number on this page yourself. We appoint no agents to approach borrowers, and no fee is payable to anybody before a loan is advanced. If money has already been sent, report it to the police and do not send more attempting to recover it.

v.How do I check you are licensed?

The register of money lenders is maintained by the Companies Registry and searchable free through its e-Services portal. Look up the exact legal name yourself; a licence number printed in an advertisement proves nothing on its own.

vi.What if I cannot make a payment?

Telephone before the due date rather than after. The options while an account is current are much wider, and going quiet is what turns one difficult month into a default. If any lender responds to arrears with threats or harassment, that is a matter for the police, whoever the money came from.
